Highest efficiency: advantages compared
to asynchronous motors
The synchronous motor (PM motor) has several key advantages over the asynchronous motors mainly used in swimming pool technology. Asynchronous motors are less efficient than synchronous motors because of their rotor slip mechanism. The smaller the asynchronous motor the greater the losses and therefore the lower the efficiency. PM motors offer the optimum alternative for this type of application: already now, their efficiency levels place them above IE3-grouped motors, i.e. they are more efficient than required for IE3 in accordance with the IEC code.
The pump characteristic curve pictured here compares the electrical power consumption(effective power) of a PM motor with that of an asynchronous motor (driving power 3 kW). The PM motor has a far lower consumption level.
An investment that quickly pays off!
The current high cost of electricity means the additional investment in the profitable technology soon pays off. If a swimming pool water pump runs at an average of 8,000 hours per year, the higher investment pays for itself in less than 18 months (depending on the motor capacity and the operating point).
